Toss Out Your Could Haves and Should Haves

As we adjust to all that 2020 has thrown at us, most of us are still figuring out what our “new normal” is going to look like. With everything being so uncertain, it’s easy to get wrapped up in thoughts of things we could have done differently. However, whether or not our regrets are founded, the truth is that losing sleep over them does us no good. We could all use a reminder once in a while to live in the present. And in honor of Toss Out Your Could Haves and Should Haves Day which is this Saturday, July 18, we’re encouraging you to take steps to let go of those things you can’t change. Here are some steps you can take to move toward letting go of the past:

Be Gentle With Yourself

Beating yourself up for hanging onto things you feel you should have let go of is counterproductive. Be compassionate with yourself and understand that this is a long process that won’t be solved instantly.

Physically Toss Regrets Away

Write down a list of your “could haves” and “should haves” and destroy it. A symbolic gesture like this can go a long way toward helping you let go of your regrets.

Surround Yourself With Supportive People

Surround yourself with people who are good listeners, people who are quick to forgive, and people who are so fun to be around that you aren’t dwelling on the past when you’re with them.

Be Mindful and Positive

Simple mindfulness goes a long way. When we dwell too much on the past, it prevents us from focusing on the future. Try to take a minute or two every day to remind yourself of something positive you’ve done. Promise to yourself that you’ll keep taking steps to stop dwelling on mistakes.

Living in the present is important, but there are ways to reduce the risk of regrets in the future. One common regret we see is people not having adequate insurance.  Some people put off purchasing certain policies, like flood insurance or life insurance, because getting them is always put on the back burner. They know preparing for the future with important coverages is the smart thing to do, but with all of life’s other commitments, they don’t get around to it.

At Spivey Insurance, we’re here to help you live peacefully and without regrets by protecting the things that are important to you. Give us a call at 704-821-4460 to discuss how we can help you protect your financial future. And be sure to connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and Pinterest.
