Goundhog Day 2016

Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow this year and bring up six more weeks of winter? The answer we need will soon be answered on February 2nd, otherwise known as Groundhog Day. Punxsutawney Phil is the legendary groundhog from Punxsutawney Pennsylvania who will wonder out of his hole after sleeping all winter long. The tradition holds that if Phil sees his shadow, it will bring six more week of winter. If he does not see his shadow, we can expect an early spring.
Last year, Phil did see his shadow, in which we did experience six more weeks of a long winter. How accurate is this American tradition? Meteorologists try to follow along with the prediction throughout the weeks to come. According to groundhog.org, Phil has seen his shadow 101 times out of 118 years. Over the last few years, his predictions have not been as follows. In 2013, Phil predicted an early spring. However, while everyone got their hopes up, snow continued to fall throughout the U.S. through mid-march.
With temperatures this winter already being abnormally warm, Punxsutawney Phil is predicted to not see his shadow, bringing on an early spring. The State Climate Office of North Carolina located in Raleigh will have a Groundhog Day celebration this year. Tell us what you think of Groundhog Day on our many social media accounts!
