Has your teenager recently gotten his or her driver’s license?

Now that
summer is here they’re going to want to take the car out every day and go
joyriding under the sun. But since they’re new to driving, it’s important they understand
the risks associated with being inexperienced on the road.

Otherwise, they risk
having to file a claim on yours or their NC
insurance
policy.

Getting a driver’s license is an exciting time for any teenager, but
it’s important that you make sure they’re paying attention to safety and not
getting out of control. Since teenagers are generally more prone to be involved
in an accident than other age groups you should be instilling in them a sense
of responsibility and safety. Here are some safety tips that parents can
provide for their teenagers:

·
Discourage distracted driving: The first thing
any parent should do is tell their kids to avoid using cell phones while
driving. Whether it’s calling or texting, eyes should be fixated on the road at
all times. Teenagers love talking to their friends, but must refrain from doing
so behind the wheel.

·
Wear a seatbelt: Hopefully your teenagers picked
up the habit of wearing their seatbelt after years of driving with you, but if
not, make sure they wear their seatbelts every time they drive.

·
Restrict night driving: Because teen drivers are
generally inexperienced, you should try and limit the amount of time they spend
driving after dark. Driving at night can be more difficult than driving during
the day, so make sure you keep this in mind.

There’s a difference between being a good and safe driver and it’s
important for your teenager to understand the difference. By following the tips
above, your child should be ready to take on the open road while avoiding
claims on their NC insurance
