Why It’s Wonderful to Walk Your Dog

If you follow us on Facebook, you know our beloved office dog Molly recently graduated from physical therapy after undergoing knee surgery in September. She’s getting back to her old self just in time because January is Walk Your Dog Month! Now that she can move around freely again, Molly has been absolutely loving the fresh air, interesting smells and new dogs and people she gets to meet on her daily walk.

Walk Your Dog Month was created to help raise awareness about obesity in dogs. The Association of Pet Obesity Prevention published a survey in 2017 which found that 56% of dogs in the U.S. are obese. Since obesity in dogs is linked to arthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease and other ailments, helping your dog stay at a healthy weight is important. Going on regular walks with your dog is the best way to do just that!

Alleviating or preventing weight issues is not the only reason to take your dog for regular walks. Dogs evolved from pack animals and are social creatures. Especially if your dog is the only pet in your home, walk time can be a great opportunity for socialization with other dogs.

Walking your dog is great for your own wellbeing too! Walking is a low impact exercise that is great for both your physical and mental health. And it’s free — no gym membership required!

Maybe the best thing about walking your dog though, aside from the health benefits for you both, is that it will strengthen your bond. Spending quality time with your pet will show her how much you love her.

So get out there and walk your pooch! We couldn’t be happier our sweet Molly is feeling better. For regular updates and adorable photos of Molly, connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn or Pinterest.
