10 Jun What can I do to protect myself during Hurricane Season?
Hurricane Season has officially started. June 1st was the official first day of hurricane season for the Atlantic Coast. Unfortunately, North Carolina is on the Atlantic Coast. We must not be concerned about what could happen, but we should prepare ourselves for when it does.
One way to protect yourself is by properly preparing for it. When you know that your home is in a high-risk area then you must be familiar with the proper procedures. You must check the foundation of your home. You must make sure there are no cracks in the foundation so water will not get in easily. You can also protect it by elevating your home on stilts if you are in a high flooding zone. This will only protect your home and lower your risk of flooding. You can also apply sealants to your walls, windows, or doorways. This will help keep water out of your home. You will want to be sure that the Electrical outlets are at least 1 foot or more above the ground. This will help prevent Electrical damage.
The most important part of protecting your home in the event of a flood is making sure you are properly covered. Do you have Flood Insurance? If you live in a High-Risk flood zone, you most likely do. That is very important to have when you live close to the coast. It may not flood a lot in NC, but you do not want to wait until it is too late. You should always make sure your properly covered. Hurricanes and Floods hit NC every year. The damage they cause is not always detrimental but usually there is one every 10-20 years that is.
Contact your local Spivey Agent to ask if you should have flood insurance. You should always be safe rather than sorry. Insurance saves lives, and homes.
