This past week, we graciously welcomed fall! Before we know it, we are going to be making the switch from air conditioning to heat to keep our homes warm. This switch causes an increase risk for fires to spur up. Most fires happen between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., or while you are not home. We may never think that house fires can happen to us, until they become a reality. Make sure you take the steps now to prevent a house fire. Here are five helpful hints:
1.Make sure all your batteries in your smoke detectors are working. Forgetting about the batteries in your smoke detector can be one of the easiest things to do. If your smoke detector does not have working batteries, it is pointless. A yearly check-up on your batteries will be helpful to making sure your smoke detectors work!
2.Make sure your fire extinguisher has not gone bad. What many people do not realize is that fire extinguisher has an expiration date. If your personal fire extinguisher is out date, it will not work properly. Check the fire extinguisher in your house to make sure that it is still in date and works.
3.Make sure to do a home inventory of all necessary items. What are the necessary items that you should include in your home innovatory? Big ticket items, such as refrigerators, washer and dryers, and other items that are expensive and can be covered incase of a fire.
4.Create an escape route. If you do not have one already, create an escape route for your home incase of a fire. Make sure all residents of the home are aware of this escape route. If you have one already, go over it. It wouldn’t hurt to practice a couple times!
5.Make sure home insurance includes fire damage. Call your local insurance agent and make sure that your home insurance covers damages incase of a house fire.
