It’s Fire Safety Week Oct.6-12

Everyone needs to be educated about fire safety! Even those of us who think we know it all could use a friendly reminder!

Caution and awareness can help to prevent or reduce the amount of damage to persons and property. Estimates of almost half of all fires are caused because the persons around were not paying attention about what was around a stove or hot environment.

5 friendly reminders about what to do in case of a fire are listed below. Please share them with your friends, family and everyone in your community!

–          When in doubt, just get out! If you are caught in a house fire, leave; close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number as soon as possible.

–          If you do try to fight the fire, be sure others are already getting out of the way. Clear your path in case you need to exit in a hurry!

–          If you have a fire in your microwave oven, turn it off immediately and keep the door closed. Never open the door until the fire is completely our. Unplug the appliance if you can safely reach the outlet.

–          If you are having a control fire outside, bonfire or campfire, make sure you have a water hose close by. If there isn’t water available, make sure you have a fire extinguisher something that you can put out an uncontrollable fire if need be.

–          Always the saying, “Stop, drop and roll.” We all learned this in elementary school for a reason. Putting out flames can be as simple as smothering the fire.

Also, remember that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors could fail, so test them frequently! Replace those batteries if you have not done so within the past year.
