ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Spin-Offs

If you have been on any social media site within the last month then you have probably heard about or watched multiple “Ice Bucket Challenge” videos. What is the ice-bucket challenge? It is a challenge to create awareness and raise money towards ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. From July 29th to August 28th there has been approximately $100 million dollars raised. This disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Muscle control movement is lost and patients eventually become paralyzed. People who accept the ice bucket challenge pour large amounts of ice water on their head and then challenge others to do the same. If the challenge is not accepted within 24 hours then the rules state they must donate money to ALS foundation. Millions of people have become involved including celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Lebron James, and even Bill Gates.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is now a worldwide phenomenon. The challenge has made its way to India, but they are doing something a little different. India is a country who cannot afford to waste numerous amounts of water that is why they are doing the “Rice Bucket Challenge”. India started the rice bucket challenge to help save starving families in poor neighborhoods. India is being resourceful and helping to end hunger one family at a time.

Another Spin off the ice bucket challenge is called the “Dirt Bucket Challenge”. California is experiencing a significant drought and it doesn’t make much sense for them to waste any water. Two Californians suggested dumping dirt on your head instead of water to continue to raise awareness for ALS and also for the drought. A man in Hawaii has created the “Trash Bucket Challenge”. He is not concerned with raising a ton of money, but instead raising awareness to help keep beaches, parks, and streets around the world clean. The challenge is only a few days old, but people in New Zealand have already accepted. New challenges are being created every day and it’s exciting to see what will come next!
