Love Your Heart: How to Keep it Healthy

February is heart health month.  Men and women everywhere are wearing red and showing their support. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one cause for women’s death in the United States. What many people do not know is that heart disease is preventable. Some factors involved in heart disease are not preventable, such as gender, age, and family history. National Wear Red Day is February 2nd. Here at Spivey Insurance Group we want to wear red and support heart health month.

So how can you prevent heart disease? The first step to preventing heart disease is making better life choices. Increasing physical activity, stop smoking, and eating better are the three basics to making smarter life decisions. So, what do these involve?

Increasing your physical activity will keep your heart healthy. Everyone should participate in at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. This includes moderate exercise to increase your heart rate. Practicing regular physical activity will make your heart stronger and less susceptible to heart disease.

It is every day we are told to watch what we eat to keep off the extra weight. But now you can watch what you eat in order to prevent heart disease. Adding things to your diet such as fiber and fish and cutting things out such as salts and fat will improve the wellness of your heart. This does not mean deprive yourself entirely on your favorite fatty foods, but moderately cutting those out of your diet will help your heart become stronger.

Achieving these goals to having a healthier heart is more achievable than you think. Make sure to take these extra steps to making sure your heart is healthy.
